Welcome to Weston. Whether you just closed on a house or you are still unpacking boxes, the first few weeks in a new city come with a long to-do list. Who do you call for water? When does the trash go out? Where is the closest urgent care?

We put together this guide to help you get settled fast, with the phone numbers and addresses you actually need. Every detail here comes from the City of Weston and Broward County.

Start With Water, and the Rest Follows

Water service for all of Weston comes from the City of Sunrise. You can open your account at the New River Civic Center, 60 Weston Road, open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The phone number is 954-746-3232.

Two things to know. Only homeowners can open a water account, not tenants. And to open or close one, bring your executed settlement statement, your driver’s license or photo ID, and your Social Security number.

Here is the part that saves you a call: garbage and recycling collection starts automatically when you open your water account. You do not have to set that up separately.

Garbage, Recycling, and Bulk Trash

Republic Services handles collection in Weston. Call 954-583-1830 for information or to order additional or replacement carts. Garbage collection fees show up on your annual tax bill rather than a separate monthly invoice.

Bulk trash pickup for big items happens quarterly, in October, January, April, and July. There is no collection on December 25.

Electric and Gas

Electric service comes from FPL. Call 954-797-5000 to start service, or dial 711 for the relay service if you are hearing or speech disabled.

Natural gas is available in limited areas from TECO/Peoples Gas. Their 24-hour line is 1-877-832-6747, and that same number handles emergency service.

Driver’s License, Tags, and Voter Registration

New to Florida? You will need a Florida license and to register your vehicle.

For a driver’s license, the nearest state office is at 8001 Pembroke Road in Pembroke Pines, at the northwest corner of University Drive and Pembroke Road. The phone number is 954-497-1570.

For auto tags and titles, there is a private tag agency right here in town at 16660 Saddle Club Road, phone 954-745-4697. Keep in mind private agencies may charge extra fees, and this one takes cash or check only. Florida titles are processed in Tallahassee and mailed to you.

To register to vote, call the Broward County Supervisor of Elections at 954-357-7050, register online, or stop by Weston City Hall at 954-385-2000. Library branches and driver license service centers also have forms.

Healthcare Close to Home

Weston is fortunate here. Cleveland Clinic Florida has a 24-hour emergency room, hospital, and clinic in town. The hospital is at 3100 Weston Road and the clinic is at 2950 Cleveland Clinic Boulevard. Call 954-659-5000.

For less serious visits, Broward Health Weston urgent care is at 2300 N. Commerce Parkway, 954-217-5700. Baptist Health Urgent Care is at 1642 Town Center Circle, 954-837-1150. Neither urgent care is open 24 hours, so call ahead.

Schools and the Library

Weston children attend Broward County public schools. The School Board of Broward County can be reached at 754-321-0000, and school assignment and registration details are on BrowardSchools.com.

The Broward County Weston Branch Library sits at 4205 Bonaventure Boulevard, phone 954-357-5420. It is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Sunday.

Don’t Forget the Homestead Exemption

This one is worth real money. Legal Florida residents can claim a Homestead Exemption on a home, condo, co-op apartment, and certain mobile home lots if they qualify. The Florida Constitution provides the exemption on the first and third $25,000 of assessed value on an owner-occupied residence. To be entitled to it, the property must be your permanent home as of January 1, or the permanent home of someone legally or naturally dependent on you.

Get Ready for Storm Season

Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Sign up for CodeRed, Weston’s emergency notification system, which sends an automated voice message straight to your phone.

Good news for your insurance bill: Weston participates in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System and holds a Class 6 rating. That earns property owners a 20 percent discount on NFIP flood insurance policies issued or renewed in Special Flood Hazard Areas. Preferred Risk Policies in Zones B, C, and X are not eligible.

A Few More Useful Numbers

The U.S. Post Office is at 1870 N. Corporate Lakes Boulevard, and the national line is 1-800-275-8777. Broward County Transit Route 23 runs along Weston Road. For passport services, the Broward County Clerk of Court at the West Regional Courthouse, 100 N. Pine Island Road, Room 180 in Plantation, is an acceptance facility. Call 954-831-6565 for hours.

If you brought a pet, Broward County requires every dog and cat to have a rabies vaccination and a Broward County Pet Rabies Registration tag. Call 954-359-1313 or visit Broward.org/Animal.

Want city news on your TV? Weston Government TV is on Blue Stream channel 25, Comcast channel 78, and AT&T U-verse channel 99.

Now Go Enjoy Your New Town

Once the boxes are unpacked, Weston has more than 245 acres of parkland waiting for you, plus a racquet club, a YMCA family center, and miles of trails. It is a good place to get to know your neighbors.
