Thirty years ago this Thursday, on Sept. 3, 1996, voters said yes and Weston became a city. The City is marking it with a story rather than a ceremony.
“Weston at 30: A History Podcast” launches Thursday, Sept. 3, with a new episode every Thursday this month. It is narrated by John R. Flint, Weston’s first city manager, who held the job from just after incorporation until 2019. Nobody alive has a better seat for the story. It is worth stopping for a second on what those 30 years built. Weston now covers 27 square miles and holds 242 acres of open space and parks. Two new shelters opened at Vista Park this summer. Windmill Ranch Park, a $5.8 million project on Bonaventure Boulevard that broke ground in September 2025, is due to open early this fall with a playground, a sand court, a multicourt for basketball and pickleball, a walking path and restrooms.
Weston also keeps winning things. At this year’s Florida Festivals and Events Association convention, the City brought home four SUNsational Awards for its community events. In June, Weston won a $250,000 state grant to replace the roof on City Hall, and in August it won a $75,000 community forestry grant for tree pruning and maintenance. Those are the kind of unglamorous wins that keep a city running.
The outside scorecards agree. U.S. News ranks Weston the No. 3 Best Place to Live in Florida and the No. 9 Safest Community in the Nation.
None of that happened on its own. It happened because 30 years of residents kept showing up to meetings, coaching teams, running clubs and voting. A city is a habit as much as it is a place, and Weston has kept the habit.
