Every September, Rotary International observes Basic Education and Literacy Month, highlighting the power of education to transform lives and strengthen communities. For the Rotary Club of Weston, however, investing in education is far more than a one-month campaign—it’s a year-round commitment to helping students succeed from childhood through college.
Education has long been one of the club’s highest priorities. Through literacy programs, student recognition, school support, youth leadership, and scholarships, the Rotary Club of Weston is making a lasting difference in the lives of local students.
One of the club’s most heartwarming literacy initiatives connects Rotarians with children hundreds of miles away through Zoom. Club members read stories aloud to children who are unable to attend in person, encouraging a love of reading while reminding them that caring adults are invested in their future.
The club also proudly sponsors Interact Clubs at Weston’s three local high schools. These student-led service organizations introduce young people to leadership, volunteerism, and environmental stewardship. One of their signature projects is the End Plastic Soup initiative, where students collect discarded plastic that is recycled into park benches—turning waste into a lasting community resource while promoting environmental responsibility.
As each new school year begins, the Rotary Club of Weston helps ensure students are ready to learn by organizing its annual backpack and school supply drive. Thanks to the generosity of club members and community supporters, local children receive the essential supplies they need to start the school year with confidence.
The club also recognizes exceptional students through its monthly Student of the Month program. Outstanding students from area high schools are honored at Rotary meetings, where they share their achievements, goals, and aspirations with club members. Each student also receives an honorarium to help support future college expenses.
Perhaps the club’s most significant investment in education comes through two of its signature fundraising events—the Weston Drawdown and the Weston Golf Classic. Together, these events fund scholarships for approximately 80 graduating seniors each year. Over the years, the Rotary Club of Weston has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships, helping thousands of local students pursue higher education and achieve their dreams.
The club’s commitment to literacy also extends throughout the community by supporting several Little Free Libraries in Weston. Volunteers keep these neighborhood book exchanges stocked with books for readers of all ages, making it easy for children and families to discover new stories, build literacy skills, and foster a lifelong love of reading.
“Education changes lives,” says the Rotary Club of Weston. “Whether we’re helping a child discover the joy of reading, providing school supplies, mentoring young leaders, or awarding scholarships, we’re investing in the future of our entire community.”
