Weston has landed a $75,000 federal grant to get its trees ready for hurricane season, and the work will focus on one of the most familiar stretches of green in the city.
The Community Forestry Disaster Recovery Grant pays for the city’s Sustainable Tree Canopy Maintenance project. The money comes through the Urban and Community Forestry Program, a federal program run by the U.S. Forest Service.
About 940 trees are covered, all along a one mile stretch of the Bonaventure canal bank.
The work is less about planting and more about making what is already there tougher. Crews will do structural pruning so trees stand up better to wind, take out dead and hazardous limbs, and make corrective cuts that lower the chance a tree comes down in a storm. A healthy, well pruned tree is far less likely to end up across a road or on a roof.
The city credits Landscape Director Andy Matusevich, Assistant Landscape Director Patrick Clifford, and recently retired Director of Landscaping Thad Bielecki for putting the project together.
