Getting ready for the new school year just got a little easier for Broward County students and teachers. The Broward Education Foundation has kicked off its annual Back to School Supply Drive, running now through August 31.
The Foundation is the only 501(c)(3) charity dedicated solely to students and teachers in Broward County Public Schools. Its supply drive helps kids start the year with what they need, and it takes some pressure off teachers, who often buy classroom supplies with their own money. According to the National Education Association, more than 90% of teachers spend an average of $800 of their own money each year on classroom supplies.
Last year, the drive helped more than 130,000 students at 195 schools and provided supplies to over 12,000 teachers across the district.
“Every child deserves a fair chance at a quality education,” said James A. Knapp, President & CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “By providing students with the tools they need, we’re helping build their confidence and setting them up for success in the classroom while giving teachers the resources they need to create engaging learning environments.”
There are several easy ways to pitch in. You can request a free donation box for your workplace, adopt a school and help fill backpacks, shop the Foundation’s Amazon Wishlist, or host a virtual drive with an online gift at browardedfoundation.org/drive. Every bit helps: $25 fills a backpack for one student, $100 supports a teacher, and $250 provides art supplies for a whole classroom.
Most-needed items include backpacks, black composition books, crayons, 2-pocket folders, glue sticks, markers, notebook paper, #2 pencils, rulers, and child-safe scissors.
