E-BIKES, E-SCOOTERS AND E-MOTORCYCLES
The City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office are working to keep Weston residents of all ages safe.
It is likely that you have seen kids (and adults) zipping around town on a micromobility device. As the popularity of e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices continues to grow, the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) are working together to promote safe and responsible use throughout the community.
Micromobility devices are generally small, lightweight vehicles designed for a single rider and powered by human effort, electricity, or a combination of both. Common examples include bicycles, e-bikes, e-scooters, e-skateboards and hoverboards. While these devices are intended for relatively low-speed transportation, many are being operated at speeds that create safety concerns for riders, pedestrians and motorists.
Riders of e-bikes and e-scooters have the same legal rights and responsibilities as bicyclists. They must obey all traffic laws, and riders under age 16 are required by law to wear a helmet.
An e-motorcycle is NOT a micromobility device. These devices go at much higher speeds and legally require a motorcycle license, registration, and insurance to operate. They cannot be ridden on sidewalks.
The City has developed and promoted a range of educational materials specifically designed for parents, as well as educational outreach targeting children and parents.
BSO WILL CONTINUE EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH AND ENFORCEMENT THROUGHOUT WESTON.
- BSO has issued more than 120 citations related to improper e-bike or e-motorcycle operation.
- BSO has impounded 17 e-motorcycles operating in violation of state law.
- BSO personnel have participated in more than 10 outreach events at schools, Homeowner Associations and community events.
- BSO also uses electronic message boards, podcasts, flyers, and social media to educate residents about safe riding practices.

Florida law prohibits modifying an electric bicycle to increase its motor-powered speed capability. State law also places responsibility on parents and guardians, who may not knowingly permit a minor to violate e-bike regulations. (Florida Statute 316.2065(8))
Micromobility devices offer many benefits, including affordability, convenience and reduced environmental impact. However, they also present safety risks for riders and pedestrians when used improperly. By understanding the rules of the road, wearing appropriate safety gear and operating responsibly, riders can help keep Weston safe for everyone. Riders should also remember that Florida law requires an audible signal when overtaking or approaching pedestrians.
