More than 300 bowlers filled the lanes at Lucky Strike in Tamarac for the 10th annual Memorial Rehab Adaptive Sports & Recreation Bowl-A-Thon, and together they raised more than $36,000.
The money helps adults with physical disabilities stay active all year. Memorial Foundation and Memorial Rehabilitation Institute co-host the event, and the funds cover equipment, transportation, entry fees and other costs that can keep people from joining in.
“Support from the Bowl-A-Thon gives people with physical disabilities opportunities to stay active, compete and connect with others throughout the year,” said Paolo Stanchi, licensed occupational therapist and Adaptive Sports & Recreation specialist at Memorial Rehabilitation Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital South. “These funds help remove barriers so our athletes can participate in programs and experiences that might otherwise be out of reach.”
The program serves people living with the effects of stroke, spinal cord or brain injury, amputation and other conditions. Activities run year-round and include wheelchair basketball, bowling, adaptive cycling, water aerobics, sled hockey, fishing, fitness classes, SCUBA, picnics, game nights and support groups. Its three wheelchair basketball teams compete nationally, and one of them is the only women’s team in Florida.
“For the people who take part in these programs, being able to get out, stay active and try something new can make a meaningful difference,” said Kelley Morris, president of the Memorial and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundations. “We are incredibly grateful to our community for coming together year after year to help ensure these programs remain available to the people who rely on them.”
Sponsors included the medical staffs of Memorial Hospital Pembroke, Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital Miramar and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, along with OPC Prosthetic Centers, Hanger Clinic, Holman Automotive Group, Price Family Foundation and more than a dozen other local businesses.
