For more than 10 years, the Diamond in the Ruff program has facilitated the adoption of more than 450 animals at the Humane Society of Broward County. Sponsored by J.R. Dunn Jewelers, the program highlights dogs, cats and even the occasional rabbit, who have been waiting for their new homes without having much luck. Once highlighted as Diamonds in the Ruff, the average wait for adoption is 26 days, and many have found homes within a week of their sponsorship. So, if you’re looking to add a little sparkle to your family, we hope you’ll consider adopting one of our Diamonds in the Ruff.
One of our current sparkling gems is Harriet (ID 720840) and she has been waiting for a home for over two months. This gal is a 5-year-old Beagle mix who was found running after a truck that kept speeding up as she tried to follow it. Eventually, she became too tired to keep going and was brought to the Humane Society of Broward County. We don’t know anything about her life before that day, but since arriving at the shelter, we’ve been slowly getting to know her. The staff and volunteers have spent a lot of time with Harriet to help her acclimate, and she has made a lot of progress. Once Harriet is out of her kennel and feeling more comfortable, she really starts to open up. She enjoys exploring the yard with her nose leading the way, walks well once she settles into the leash, and has happily approached people for pets and attention. She is also VERY treat motivated, although we’re still working on taking those treats a little more gently,
Harriet has also been through heartworm treatment during her time at the shelter. She is still on activity restrictions while she recovers, but at 5 years old, she has plenty of speed when she’s feeling comfortable! This cutie has so much love to give and deserves a home where she can finally relax and be herself. Thanks to our friends at J.R. Dunn Jewelers, they have kindly paid her adoption fee.
