If you have ever stood on the sideline of a Saturday game squinting at a gray sky and guessing, Davie just took the guesswork out of it.
The town has installed lightning detection and alert systems at eight parks. The equipment, made by Perry Weather, watches for lightning nearby and then tells everyone at the park with horns, strobe lights, and announcements over the PA.
The signals are simple enough for a kid to learn. Six five second horn blasts means lightning is close and it is time to get inside. Three short blasts means the all clear. You can also check live conditions any time at http://www.davie-fl.gov/lightning.
If the system is ever offline, the old 30/30 rule still applies. If you count 30 seconds or less between a flash and the thunder, head indoors, and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble before going back out.
The eight parks with the new systems are:

- Davie Golf Club, 8201 Nova Drive
- Driftwood Park, 3300 NW 77th Avenue
- Potter Park, 4300 SW 57th Terrace
- Shenandoah Park, 14601 SW 14th Street
- Waterford Park, 15090 S. Waterford Drive
- Waverly Park, 6625 Hawkes Bluff Avenue
