June marks the start of hurricane season, and it is critical that we take proactive steps to prepare ourselves, our families, and our homes. Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, and early preparation can make a difference in protecting lives and minimizing damage.

It is important to ensure you are prepared with at least seven days of essentials: non-perishable food, one gallon of water per person per day, medications, pet food, and personal items. In addition, you should have flashlights, extra batteries, and a first aid kit. Keep your vehicle fueled in case of shortages. Protect important documents by storing copies of identification, insurance policies, and medical records in a waterproof container. Last year, many hurricane supply items were granted a permanent sales tax exemption, so there is no need for a sales tax exemption week.

Staying informed is critical. Broward County offers several key resources:

• Broward County Hurricane Hotline: 311 or 954-831-4000

○ This resource provides information on evacuations, shelter locations, and storm updates. They can offer a list of pet-friendly shelters.

• Vulnerable Population Registry: Broward.org/registry – 311 or 954-831-4000

○ The registry allows municipalities to help evaluate at-risk residents’ needs in their communities and assist in planning a response in an emergency.

• Broward County Emergency Management Division: 954-831-3900

○ They coordinate disaster plans and offer comprehensive preparedness and recovery programs.

• Special Needs Registry: 954-831-3902

○ This resource provides support for individuals who need special medical assistance when evacuating or seeking shelter.

• AlertBroward: Broward.org/Emergency/Pages/AlertBroward.aspx

• FEMA Helpline: 1-800-621-3362

○ They provide federal disaster assistance, including financial aid for home repairs and other storm-related losses.

• American Red Cross Broward County Chapter: 954-797-3800

○ This resource offers immediate emergency support, including shelter, meals, and relief supplies for families affected by disasters.
