South Florida Is Dry—Don’t Be That Person

  • June 2026

After the recent brush fire that spread through the eastern Everglades and came dangerously close to communities in Weston, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines, fire safety is top of mind across Southwest Broward. While wildfires may feel like something that only happens out west, South Florida’s dry conditions and strong winds can quickly turn a small mistake into a major emergency.

This year’s rainfall totals have been lower than average, leaving vegetation unusually dry for this time of year. That means it takes far less to spark a fire than many people realize. And unfortunately, some of the most common causes are also some of the most preventable.

So, in the spirit of keeping our neighborhoods safe, here are a few simple reminders:

• Toss cigarette butts in proper containers, not out car windows or into landscaping.

• Skip fireworks outside of approved celebrations, especially during dry spells.

• Don’t park vehicles on dry grass; hot exhaust systems can ignite vegetation surprisingly fast.

• If grilling outdoors, keep grills away from brush, fences, and overhangs, and never leave them unattended.

• Avoid dragging trailer chains on roads, which can create sparks along dry shoulders.

• Be cautious with yard equipment, especially tools that create heat or sparks during the hottest parts of the day.

Residents should also take a few minutes to clear dry debris and dead vegetation from around their homes. A tidy yard isn’t just good curb appeal—it can help slow the spread of fire.

The recent Everglades fire served as an important reminder that we all play a role in protecting our community. What started as a small fire by Mack’s Fish Camp just west of Miramar, rapidly turned into over 11,000 acres burned, which caused Everglades Holiday Park to cease operations until the fire threat was under control. Firefighters and emergency personnel work tirelessly to keep residents safe, but prevention starts long before the sirens go off.

South Florida’s dry season won’t last forever, but until the rains return consistently, a little extra awareness can go a long way. Let’s keep our community safe, responsible, and smoke-free this season!
