April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month and at the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) staff are truly grateful for ALL the volunteers that make a difference every day. More than 630 volunteers all play interictal roles at the non-profit shelter that is located on Griffin Road in Fort Lauderdale.
While most people think of the Humane Society as an adoption center, the HSBC is so much more and many of the programs are run by volunteers. The Animal Assisted Therapy teams consist of volunteers and their well-trained dogs that spread cheer at hospitals and nursing homes. Education volunteers visit schools to teach about kindness and respect to animals; photography volunteers and assistants capture images and videos to share on the shelter’s website and social media; volunteers walk, bathe, train, sit with the dogs and cats; summer camp and birthday parties take place thanks to volunteers who help. Volunteers also serve in the following roles: security, greeters, guides, animal care, outreach, and foster care.
Two volunteers from Weston that have been with the shelter for a combined 44 years are Debbie Boles and Dorothy Schaffler. Both ladies give their time in the Pet Boutique located in the shelter’s lobby. Dorothy began volunteering in 2000 and Debbie in 2008. According to Linda Sanders, the Director of Volunteer Services, “Dorothy on Thursdays and Debbie on Sundays go above and beyond to help new adopters find exactly what they need, ensuring both pets and their people start off on the right paw. Their knowledge, warmth, and genuine enthusiasm make every visitor feel welcome.”
Another Westin resident who gives of her time is Natalie Fry. Natalie comes in weekly to bathe the dogs so they are looking, and smelling their best, for potential new families.
